The new high school itself includes a state-of-the-art classrooms and labs including a variety of vocational labs, a media center, a community black box theater and auditorium, a fine arts suite, a gymnasium and PE facilities, a “Food Court” style food service area, an EHPA shelter with Emergency Operations Center, and a large, full-service ESE component and a state-of-the-art clinic for students up to age 22 with severe cognitive, physical and behavioral disabilities.
The standalone project evolved into the addition of 32,000 square feet, including a double-height, two-story food court area with a glass wall overlooking the University’s marquee natural preserve and cypress dome located at the center of campus.
The AD Henderson University School is a lab school for the FAU College of Education, the objective of which is to create self-directed, autonomous learners who will experience diverse and transformative learning environments as they progress through a structured teacher-directed traditional classroom.
The comprehensive master plan includes existing campus modernization and future expansion, campus visioning and programming services, along with a capital funding plan, feasibility analyses and existing condition assessments for both campuses.
The once beautiful and elaborate school was slated for major renovation and modernization, a project for which M-DCPS committed significant resources. Known as “The Biltmore of Education,” its design includes grand interior spaces, open courtyards, colonnades and fountains.
The Katherine E. Franco Center for Learning Resources consists of a library, technology center, administrative and office complex for the lower, middle and upper schools, three multi-disciplinary labs and a multi-media recording studio.
The first 21st century school designed for the Monroe County School District, the new school will inspire collaborative learning for the next generation of PK-8 Florida Keys students. Originally built in the 1970s, the project consisted of the phased replacement of the existing facilities while ongoing operations were maintained.
