Boca Raton Middle School

Boca Raton, FL

Boca Raton Middle School is a phased replacement of the existing school originally built in the 1950s.  Our approach is to replace the entire facility while maintaining the existing school in operation with minimal disruption to education.  The school is a 1470-student station facility with a large exceptional student population.  In addition, the school’s administration suite is designed with a “high security” access system, which ensures all visitors are visually observed prior to entering the school.

The school design is composed of a two-story classroom building, which contains all classrooms, labs and resource rooms arranged in “houses.”  Each “house” is arranged to service a grade level population (6th, 7th, and 8th grade) and contains its own mini-administration suite.  The assembly spaces and fine arts area are located in an adjacent building across a landscaped courtyard, which serves as a central organizing space from which administration can supervise all student movement and oversee the main access points of the school using minimal staff.  The assembly building is a resource for all the grade levels in the adjacent building and can be used for after-hour school or community functions without opening the entire school to the public. The building’s architecture is specifically designed to achieve compatibility with the architectural guidelines of Boca Raton.  The use of Mediterranean details, a barrel tile entry and rich earth tones provide a beautiful setting in which to teach and learn.
