Glades Middle School

Miramar, FL

This nearly 2000-student station prototype middle school is composed of two buildings organized around a central courtyard.  The main entry to the school is designed to provide a defined sense of entry and clear organization to the site.  The façades have been composed of several design elements such as stair towers, a well-defined main entry point, a decorative entry plaza and decorative relief compatible with the City of Miramar design guidelines.

The academic building contains all of the general classrooms, the skills, health, consumer science, business and science labs, the administration suite and the media center. The house concept within the school allows for each grade level to be designated its own floor of the building.  Common areas are provided at the main building’s center for convenient access by students and teachers and to allow for the greatest amount of natural light exposure for the general classrooms.  The schools’ design easily facilitates after-hours community use without opening the entire school to the public.

In addition, the compact school design enables the site field and green areas to be maximized, enabling enhanced community use with the City of Miramar parks located to the east and west of the school site. The central courtyard, open green spaces and park settings provide numerous external learning opportunities that allow students to be physically active and to interact with the community and natural world around them.
