Homestead, FL

The new Homestead High School for Medical Arts for Science and Technology (MAST) is a flagship project representing a new generation of high schools for the fourth largest school district in the nation. MAST High School is both unique and innovative, incorporating an intensive science and mathematics curriculum as well as small schools career academies. MDCPS commissioned Zyscovich Architects to convert the old Homestead Hospital into this new exciting high school. The school’s curriculum is informed by its industry and community partners, including Baptist Hospital and the MDC College of Nursing, to prepare students for post-secondary education and work in the fields of medicine, research and pharmacology. This location will also serve as a virtual training hospital facility for Miami Dade College.

The scope of work included: complete existing conditions assessments for the adaptive re-use; complete interior demolition and asbestos mitigation; re-roofing; new mechanical and electrical systems; new classrooms and science labs; pharmacology, biomedical, and physical therapy laboratories; and new administration and food service areas. The exterior work includes an outdoor dining area, parking lot improvements and new landscaping. Zyscovich conducted programming and complete scope verification as well as prepared a conceptual design prior to developing the schematic design. The project will be realized under an extremely aggressive fast-track schedule. The heavy-duty interior renovation project commenced in late August of 2010 with the first phase of construction open to students August of 2011. A second phase is scheduled to be completed before the 2012 school year begins, with construction taking place while students are in the facility.
