Westridge Middle School

Orlando, FL

Westridge Middle School, situated on a compact, suburban industrial site, is located next door to the Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) facilities management building. The facility is a 160,350 SF phased replacement new building with approximately 11,650 SF of renovated interior space. The new facility is designed to meet Green Globe sustainable metrics, with a current anticipated level of two globes.

The Master Plan includes modifications to the traffic patterns on campus that successfully separate bus, parent, and delivery traffic, as well as provide safe access for students who walk or ride bicycles to school. New exterior spaces include courtyards and physical education playfields, parking and vehicle access, sidewalks, and physical security. Additionally, new interior spaces include classroom buildings, a multi-purpose room media center, an administration suite and new entry. The project also brings new technology and sound enhancement to all educational spaces, security cameras, and new electrical and mechanical systems, including thermal ice storage.

The work included analysis of existing facilities, master planning, programming, design, construction documents, demolition plans, construction phasing plans, and construction contract administration for the development of a new cutting edge sustainable educational facility. The project also included working closely with the school district to develop new educational models and to test cutting-edge materials and systems. Project phasing includes the use of the existing middle school as an elementary swing school for one year while a new elementary replacement school is constructed. During this time the Westridge Middle School Campus will house two independently functioning campuses. At the conclusion of the year, the existing school and related facilities will be removed and a new track, courts, and site amenities will be constructed. The final comprehensive design will bring the facility up to OCPS prototype and Department of Education standards, while creating a unique campus for the Westridge Middle School students, faculty, and community
