Maxwell Elementary-Middle School

Maxwell Air Force Base, AL

Maxwell Elementary/Middle School (MEMS) is a PK-8 Department of Defense Domestic Dependent School. The two-story partial replacement/renovation project is being completed in phases to reduce overall costs and will provide educational services for military dependents living in permanent housing on Maxwell Air Force Base. The scope of work includes all design, architectural, engineering and support services necessary to prepare design-bid-build documents. The school is programmed and designed around a uniquely branded 21st century STEAM learning approach in that a variety of flexible gathering spaces are incorporated into all areas of the school, promoting collaboration and accommodating groups of various sizes. Operable wall partitions will separate learning studios and hubs, an information center and a computing center to facilitate project-based collaborative learning amongst the various age groups. Staff and student work areas and technology service centers will occupy common spaces.

The project will also include a career technical education lab, a gymnasium, science labs, an art room, a music suite, performance space, a food service area, administrative offices, a guidance counseling center, a special education office and a health services area. Site improvements will include signage, fencing, paving, landscaping, covered walkways, exterior lighting, utilities and a new playground area. The project is being designed to achieve USGBC LEED for Schools Silver certification and will comply with AT/FP and Low Impact Development Design (LIDD) standards and the International Code Council (ICC) to meet the design and construction requirements for safe refuge from storms that produce high winds as required by the State of Alabama.
